UI341 – Victorian Studies

Victorian Studies is an interdisciplinary course that examines the literature and culture of Victorian England. It examines the intersections between the literature, politics, science, art, and architecture of Victorian England from the industrial revolution through the flamboyant decadence of Oscar Wilde (1832-1901).An era of tremendous achievement, Victorian England also underwent a kind of identity crisis—in class, in spirituality, in gender, and nation. We will examine the historical and cultural context that underscores the literature and the visual arts—its celebrations, its peculiarities, and its terrors.
